      ENERGY VORTEXES

For many centuries, the native people established deep spiritual connections with the Sedona area's scared land and its mystical properties.   Hopi legend is that they emerged from the inner earth from an area just south of Sedona, now called Montezuma's Well.  The Hopi still come to the  well (small lake) to get the sacred water for their ceremonies.

Today, it is estimated that 65% of the annual 3 million visitors that come to Sedona come to explore and experience the metaphysical dimensions beyond ordinary perception.  They come for the "vortex" energy.  The scientific explanation is that "a vortex is a place where electromagnetic field energy naturally collects, creating energy "whirlpools" that can flow clockwise or counterclockwise."  It is reported that sometimes compasses and electronic devices, such as cell phones and watches don't work properly around these energy fields.

Sedona is recognized worldwide as being a spiritual power spot.  Sedona as a whole (area) is a vortex, with the energy spread throughout it like a bowl.  It is considered an ideal site (energetically) because all of the three known types of vortexes exist here. (electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic)  They are more commonly referred to as upflow, inflow and neutral or balanced vortexes.

Upflow vortexes, such as mountains, mesas, and pyramidal-type topography, are useful when one wishes to view life from a higher plane, to develop a more universal perspective or to send a prayer or affirmation out into the world.  Upflow vortex sites help people feel more positive, exhilarated and rejuvenated.  They are associated with universal oneness and harmony.  Bell Rock is an example of an upflow vortex.

Inflow vortexes, such as valleys, canyons and caves are good for introspection, meditation, contemplation, healing and gaining insight.  Boynton Canyon  is an example of the infow vortex.  Because Sedona lies in a valley that has been cut by Oak Creek, it is considered to be a huge inflow area.

Although there are numerous vortex energies in the area, there have been 4 main areas identified  that have strong discernable energies that offer easy access to the public.  Hiking trails are around all of them and all provide great views.

Other special places to connect with the sacred energy of Sedona include The Chapel of the Holy Cross, Schnebly Hill, West Fork, and the Amitabha Stupa

  1. Airport Mesa - Closest to the town of Sedona. It offers great panoramic views!
  2. Bell Rock - Adjoining the Village of Oak Creek about 5 miles south of the town of Sedona. It is easily identified by  it's bell shape formation and is an  easy hike around it.
  3. Boynton - Still a site for Native American ceremonies, this vortex offers the longest hike,- up to three hours round trip.  Take Dry Creek Rd. in West Sedona to site area.

  4. Cathedral Rock - The most photographed site in Sedona, rises above Oak Creek.  Accessible off of Lower Red Rock Loop Rd.

Finding the StrongestEnergy.

Juniper trees respond to the vortex energy in    a  physical way that reveals where this energy     is  strongest. The stronger the energy, the more of an  axial twist the Juniper trees  have in their   branches.  Instead of going straight down the branch, the  lines of growth follow a slow helical spiral along the length of the branch.  This spiraling effect can  sometimes even bend the branch itself.
